GENETICS AND CYTOEMBRYOLOGY DEPARTMENT

History of Genetics and Cytoembryology Department

The Department was formed in 1920 as the Chair of Cytology at the Botany Department, Turkistan University, and was headed by Prof. Baranov P.A. In 1925 it was reorganized into Plant Morphology and Biology Department and in 1938 into Plant Morphology and Anatomy Department. In 1945 the Department got the name of Darvinism and Selection Department and was headed by Prof. Raikova I.A. In 1950 it became Darvinism and Genetics Department and in the period from 1961 to 1982 Darvinism, Genetics and Experimental Morphology Department. In 1974 Laboratory of Private Cotton Genetics, headed by Prof. Musaev D.A. was formed at the Department. In the period from 1982 to 1988 Professor Assistant Abzalov M.F. was at the head of the Department. In 1989 the Genetics Department (headed by Prof. Musaev D.A.) merged with the Plant Cytoembriology Department (headed by Prof. Tursunov J.Yu.), the Department of Genetics (headed by Prof. Musaev D.A.) being formed.

In the period from 1990 to 2011 Genetics and Cytoembyiology Department, headed by Prof. Musaev D.A., employed professor assistants Saidkarimov A.N. and Rakhimov A.K.

Structure of the Department

Laboratory of Cotton Genetics and Cotton Genetics Collection formed in 1974, as well as “Genetics”, an educational-production center, formed in 1992, are the parts of the Department.

Main Research Directions

  1. Fundamental problems of cotton qualitative and quantitative genetic peculiarities.
  2. Creation, enrichment, upgrading and study on isogenic, mutant, introgressive and cytogenetic lines of G. hirsutum L. genetic collection 3
  3. Development of genetic bases of adaptability on the basis of study on inheritance and genetic determination of morphogenetic and production-valuable peculiarities of cotton, increase cotton crop and fiber quality.
  4. Research in genetics, cytoembryology, molecular genetics and classical genetics conducted at the “Genetics”, an educational-production center.
